16 Obvious Signs You’re Giving Your Friends Too Many Rides

Do you give your friends so many rides that you feel like an unpaid Uber driver? Ridesharing, which pairs drivers with people who need lifts, is a popular alternative to taxis, buses, and trains.

One source says that as of 2024, Uber has 58.6 million users in the U.S. But if you’re not affiliated with that or any other ridesharing company, you might get sick and tired of being the only person friends call for rides.

Here are 16 clear signs you’re giving your friends too many rides and need to hit the brakes.

They’ve Come to Expect It

If your friends behave like it’s your life-long duty to do for them whatever they ask, that can be a problem. Instead of acknowledging that you’re doing them a favor by giving them a ride, they may see it as your duty.

They Ask You for Rides at the Last Minute

Someone who believes you owe them something might ask for rides without notice. In other words, they won’t call or text you to say they’d like a ride someplace later in the week or on the weekend. They’ll call today, ask for a ride immediately, and expect you to do just that.

They Make Appointments Without Asking You First

If you’re the type of person who’ll drop whatever you need to do to help someone else, your friends might pick up on this. They may make appointments to go to the doctor, dentist, or optometrist and expect you to alter your schedule to accommodate their appointments.

Friends who are used to planting their rear ends in your vehicle seats might feel so entitled that they assume it’s okay to tag along if you’re doing errands. The fact that you’ll have to pick them up—going out of your way to do so—won’t strike them as a problem.

They Ask You and Only You for Rides

Do you have friends who will ask for favors even when there are other people they can ask? That can happen if you’re the sort of person who can’t or won’t say no. People with no conscience will, instead of sometimes asking others for assistance, call you each and every time.

They Leave Their Personal Belongings in Your Car

Friends who view you as their volunteer Uber driver might start to leave some of their stuff in your car. It makes sense from their perspective. If your job is to take them around, it might make sense for them to leave their neck massage pillow, sunglasses, or books in your car.

They Have You Prioritizing Their Appointments Over Theirs

It’s said that no one can take advantage of you unless you allow them to. But if you have friends who ask for so many rides that meeting even half of their needs means you’ll have to cancel or reschedule your own appointments, that’s a telltale sign you’re giving your friends too many rides.

They Give You the Silent Treatment if You Can’t Accommodate Them

Another sign you’re giving your friends too many rides is if they give you the silent treatment or the passive-aggressive treatment if you don’t pull out all the stops to accommodate them.

Again, if they believe you owe them something and you won’t comply, there’ll be hell to pay. And you’ll get the bill.

Are you giving friends rides so often that you spend too much money and time at gas stations? If your friends are freeloaders, it might not occur to them that you don’t fuel your vehicle with tap water. It might be time to ask them to cough up some cash if they want the occasional ride.

They Appoint You as the Go-To Driver for Group Outings

Yet another sign that you’re giving too many rides to your friends is if they view you as the default driver for group outings. If it’s assumed you’re driving everyone wherever the group is headed, that’s a sign you should insist that that responsibility is spread out among multiple people.

They’re Sending Your Odometer Reading Sky High

The average American motorist travels 13,476 miles annually, according to the Federal Highway Administration. It’s worth noting that some people drive a lot more—whether for work or other things—and others drive less—whether it’s because they don’t have a daily commute or other things. But if you’re giving friends rides left, right, and center, the miles can add up.

They’re Causing More Wear and Tear

Wear and tear in a vehicle is inevitable. But the process can be fast-tracked or accelerated if you turn your car into a taxi.

They Ask for a Ride But Want You to Make Lots of Stops Along the Way

You know your friends are used to you being the designated driver for everything if they ask for a ride to one place but end up wanting you to make many stops along the way. So, they may tell you they need a ride to the grocery store. But when you take them home, they may want to stop at the bank, the bakery, and other places.

They Ask You to Take Them Long Distances

It’s one thing if a friend asks you to take them to a store 10 or 15 minutes away. But it’s another thing if they expect you to embark upon an epic hours-long journey. Such friends often think nothing of imposing on others. They don’t consider that meeting their needs could negatively affect your job, family, and other commitments.

They Jokingly Refer to You as Their Chauffeur

If your friends jokingly refer to you as their chauffeur—an unpaid one at that—it might warrant chuckles. But the joke won’t be funny for long. That’s especially true if you’re the butt of the joke.

They Have You Feeling Exhausted

You may start to feel exhausted if you’re doing as much to get your friends around as you are to go about your own business. If you breathe a sign of frustration every time the phone rings, it might be time to tell your friends that they need to explore other options.

It can be frustrating if people expect too much of you. The best way to nip the problem in the bud is to say, “No.” You don’t have to justify it either. “No” is a complete sentence. And if you hold your ground, you won’t have to worry about your friends becoming dependent on you.
