15 Vehicles Mechanics Warn Drivers to Steer Clear Of

Why do mechanics drive “boring” cars from Honda and Toyota? The reason is simple. They work on other people’s vehicles five days a week — and the last thing they want is to wrench on their own cars on the weekends. So, sticking with reliable makes and models is a no-brainer.

Maybe We Should Learn More from Mechanics

If professional auto mechanics flock to certain vehicles, it makes sense to pay attention. But it’s also essential to heed their warnings about cars, trucks, and SUVs to avoid. That’s what this article’s about — 15 vehicles that mechanics say people should give a wide berth.

Ford Fiesta

If you want good driving dynamics, fuel efficiency, and cost-effectiveness, what’s not to love about the Ford Fiesta? The problem, according to mechanics, is the vehicle is unreliable. Let’s take the dual-clutch automatic transmission, for example. Issues like slipping gears and delayed shifting are common for the 2011 to 2016 model years.

Ford has faced class-action legal action because of the transmission issue. Unfortunately, the problems with the Ford Fiesta don’t end there. Engine stalling and rough idling are common. If you know what’s good for you, stay away!

Range Rover

Range Rover has been turning owners into backyard mechanics for decades now. And it’s not always by choice. It’s just that the vehicles are so unreliable that owners had better roll up their sleeves and get to work on their SUVs if they don’t want to go broke going to a mechanic all the time.

Let’s give credit where credit is due. Range Rovers are luxury SUVs with good off-road capabilities. So, what’s not to like? Take a seat — this might take a while. They suffer from many electrical issues ranging from the parking sensors to blind-spot monitors and from the infotainment systems to tire pressure monitoring systems.

Electrical gremlins also wreak havoc on the sunroof, windows, and door locks. Unless you want to spend all weekend wrenching on your SUV, give the Range Rover a wide berth.

Fiat 500

If you live in an urban environment and want a smaller vehicle, the Fiat 500 might seem like a great option. However, the transmission is a major source of problems. So, too, are the engine, the suspension, and other things that owners complain about.

Take it from mechanics who work on customers’ vehicles day in and day out. The Fiat 500, while quirky and fun, will cost you an arm and a leg to keep on the road.

Do you want a reliable American muscle car? The Chevrolet Camaro, according to many mechanics who get up close and personal with them, isn’t worth the problems. And there are problems galore like the transmission — whether automatic or manual — the engine, and the electrical system.

Nissan Leaf

While the Nissan Leaf is an affordable and practical EV, it also suffers from severe problems. One of the main drawbacks is battery degradation. As the battery pack ages, the range between charges can drop substantially. Some owners say they’ve lost 30% or more range after a few years.

Nissan Armada

Can we admit that the Nissan Armada is a cool name? “Armada” means fleet of warships. But this full-size SUV, which has a spacious interior and powerful engine, also has serious problems that shouldn’t be overlooked or minimized.

For instance, transmission problems include hard shifting, slipping gears, and even transmission failure. And while the 5.6-liter V8 engine is powerful, it also experiences excessive oil consumption, rough idling, misfiring, and stalling. Unfortunately, the issues don’t end there. Do yourself a favor and stay away.

The Chevrolet Bolt EV has a lot going for it, to be fair. But that doesn’t make up for the deficiencies. Its reputation suffered a hit after defects with its battery pack increased the risks of fires. It also has problems with its braking system, interior quality, and more.

GMC Yukon XL

The GMC Yukon XL is a big SUV with a powerful engine and great towing capacity, but that’s not all it has. For owners of the full-size SUV, the GMC Yukon XL also has transmission issues like delayed or hard shifting and even transmission failure. It also has electrical system issues.

Ford Expedition

If you want an SUV that can move lots of people and haul tons of stuff, the Ford Expedition is one option. It offers ample power, a spacious interior, cargo space, and great towing specs. So, what’s the problem?  The transmission is one issue. And the engine, especially the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, is prone to burning oil and stalling.

Dodge Grand Caravan

The Dodge Grand Caravan is a popular minivan that has been around for decades. However, that doesn’t mean it’s been smooth driving for owners and their families. In addition to transmission problems, the Dodge Grand Caravan suffers from engine, AC, and braking issues that don’t make it the best choice for a used vehicle.

Ford Bronco Sport

While the Ford Bronco Sport looks the part, looks can be deceiving. So, while they command attention for all the right reasons aesthetics-wise and offer good off-road capability, they have issues. The transmission, for example, is prone to delayed shifting, fluid leaks, and rough shifting. It also has engine issues and electrical system problems.

Jeep Compass

If you ask a mechanic whether they’d recommend a Jeep Compass, the odds are the answer will be “No.” The problematic continuously variable transmission is one big reason. The engine, with oil consumption problems, is another issue.

Chevrolet Tahoe

While the Chevrolet Tahoe is a capable full-size SUV with interior spaciousness and good towing specs, that’s not all there is to the vehicle.

It has some serious issues that have owners shaking their heads. Models equipped with the 6- and 10-speed automatic transmissions are especially susceptible to problems like vibrating and rough shifting. Fuel system and engine problems are also common.

Toyota CH-R

Don’t let the Toyota name fool you. The Toyota CH-R doesn’t cut it. It’s a sub-compact crossover SUV with an interesting design, but it has some issues that are not very Toyota-like.

One point of contention is the engine performance. The 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is underpowered, and acceleration is sloth-like. Meanwhile, the transmission, a CTV, has responsiveness and reliability issues.

Mini Cooper

If looks were everything, the Mini Cooper, with its iconic aesthetic, would be peachy. However, the car has some problems that make it a risky purchase. CTV failure, especially in early model years, isn’t uncommon. Engine issues and cooling system problems are also common.
