15 Mistakes You Should Avoid Making at the Gas Station

Crashes, fires, vehicle incidents, robberies, and collisions are all common at gas stations. According to Gitnux Market Data, around 6,500 gas pump-related accidents surface annually.

The best strategy is to know everything you should avoid at a gas pump station if you don’t want to end up among those 6,500. So, here is a breakdown of how you unknowingly invite mishaps at a gas station.

Leaving the Car Unattended While Pumping

It might seem harmless to take the refueling time as an opportunity to check important emails or randomly scroll down your newsfeed. The reality is quite the opposite. You have to stay vigilant of your vehicle while pumping the fuel to prevent any theft attempt. Moreover, if you are actively attending to the car, you can always respond promptly to any emergent situation and control it.

Using a Phone Near the Pump

The phone’s electronic components can ignite a catastrophic fire in explosive environments. Show yourself to be a careful person by avoiding phones at a gas pump. Moreover, there is a lot of vehicle movement there, and any distraction can result in severe accidents.

Not Paying Attention to the Sign Boards or Warning Signs

Only you are to take the blame if you don’t abide by the instructions delivered through warning signs or gas pump attendants. The signs may vary from place to place, but pump managements usually convey textual instructions under the sign for better understanding. No matter what, it is advised to learn about these signs and pay attention to them for a safer experience. You must memorize general rules at least, like “no smoking” or “turn the engine off before refueling.”

Overfilling the Tank

Excess gas may spill, leading to slips and fires. If spilled frequently, gasoline is notorious for ruining your car’s paint job. Also, overfilling the tank is highly damaging to the vehicle’s evaporative system. According to experts, it even degrades the car’s performance, besides contributing to environmental pollution.

Smoking at the Gas Pump

Don’t be surprised if you see many people frowning at you when you are smoking at a gas station. You can find hundreds of horrible fire accidents on YouTube that are caused by smoking at gas stations. Whenever you light a flame, it is likely to interact with the combustible fuel vapors near the gas pump and start an uncontrollable fire. Such an accident can claim many lives, and you never want to be the reason for a thing like that.

Not Turning Off the Engine while Refueling

All combustible fuel vapors need a little spark to start a highly unwanted chain of fireworks. A running engine poses a risk of ignition by emitting heat. In addition, turning it off before refueling positively contributes to the environment besides just preventing an accident, as it reduces unnecessary emissions.

Choosing the Wrong Fuel Types

Not all fuel types are suitable for every engine. Understanding your vehicle’s engine is key to choosing the correct fuel type. If you’re unsure, pump attendants can assist you in making the best choice for your car.

Not Securing the Gas Cap

Not securing your gas cap might seem minor, but it can have a big impact. When the gas cap isn’t properly closed, fuel can evaporate, contributing to environmental pollution and wasting fuel that could otherwise power your engine. An open gas cap can also cause a bad smell around your car, reduce fuel efficiency, and potentially let dirt and debris into your engine, leading to more serious problems. So, always tighten the gas cap after refueling to keep your car running smoothly and protect the environment.

Lingering Longer than Necessary

Everyone at the gas pump is usually in a rush, and it can cause inconvenience if you are acting slowly. You can exit the pump after refueling and park at a suitable spot to gather your items or rummage through your belongings to find something. Doing so at the gas pump station can lead to frustration in other drivers, especially during peak travel times, resulting in chaotic situations.

Re-entering your vehicle while pumping the gas is a hazard, especially during dry and cold weather conditions. The static energy can build up, leading to a spark generation on touch. The situation becomes worse when the gasoline vapors pick up the spark and start a fire. Even if it’s inevitable to enter the car for any reason, discharge all the energy by touching metal at a suitable distance from the pump nozzle.

Letting the Children Out of the Car

Never bring kids out of the car when fueling it. This exposes their sensitive skin and respiratory system to harmful fuel vapors, which can be particularly detrimental to children with pre-existing respiratory issues. Moreover, as discussed earlier, it also distracts your attention from the vehicle, which is not advised.

Not Considering Gas Hygiene

While staying around the car and paying attention to it is recommended, this does not mean you should stick close to the tank. Avoid any contact with gasoline, as the chemical benzene in it can irritate the eyes and skin. If it happens, use a non-abrasive soap and water on the skin to eliminate the fuel. Running lukewarm water through the eyes for 20 seconds should diminish the irritation.

Not Using the Right Container for Gas Filling

There are times when your vehicle needs fuel, but the gas pump is out of reach. In such situations, using a container to transport fuel is necessary. Ensure you use an approved portable container, and always place it on the ground while filling.

Driving Fast When Entering or Leaving the Gas Station

You must slow down when entering, exiting, or even passing by the gas pump station. It is a busy place with a great vehicle flow, and a careless attitude can result in an accident. The worst part is that even a minor crash can lead to a bigger incident by starting a fire because of the sparks produced by the collision.

Not Moving Away When You Notice a Fire Nearby

Fire accidents are common at gas pump stations. The fire department responds to around 4,150 pump fires annually. If a vehicle breaks out on fire, it’s advisable not to rush to it. You can’t control it alone. Just back off without moving the nozzle and notify the pump authorities immediately to avoid severe damage.

Don’t Be a Hazard Risk

Of all the things that cause an accident at the gas pump stations, ensure that you are not the one. Be a responsible citizen and take the necessary precautions to avoid situations that can be a life trauma for all.
