13 Tips for Maintaining an Electric Vehicle

Electric vehicles have come a long way. Once the stuff of fiction, EVs are now here. Whether they’re here to stay is up for discussion. But it seems there’s plenty of runway ahead for EVs, plug-in hybrids, and hybrids. We’ll have to wait and see.

If you’ve already bought into the EV dream and have one in the driveway to prove it, you need to maintain it to ensure you get your money’s worth.

EVs Require Maintenance

EVs have fewer moving parts than cars with internal combustion engines and don’t require the same maintenance tasks. For instance, you can say goodbye to oil and oil filter changes, but EVs are far from maintenance-free.

If you think that EV maintenance isn’t required, give your head a shake. Failing to perform proper maintenance can cost you big time if you’re not careful.

EV Reliability Can Be Shaky

Consumer Reports says EVs have 79% more reliability issues on average than vehicles with gas or diesel engines. So, get the mistaken notion out of your head that EVs are maintenance-free machines. You still need to budget for maintenance and repairs for an EV.

Failing to do so could lead to costly problems, and that’s something you’ll want to avoid. Fancy having to replace an EV battery prematurely due to a lack of care? Recurrent says replacing an EV battery out of warranty can cost between $5,000 and $20,000

Focus On EVs with Reputation for Reliability

One way to reduce your risks is to focus on EVs with a reputation for reliability. Like internal combustion engine vehicles, some EVs are better and more dependable than others. Consumer Reports is one of many good resources if you’re looking for the most reliable EVs of 2024. Buying a good model will save you a lot of grief and reduce expenditures.

That said, here are 13 tips for maintaining your EV so it doesn’t let you down.

Follow the Manufacturer’s Maintenance Schedule

First things first: Comb over the ownership manual with a fine-tooth comb. Review the stipulated EV maintenance schedule so you know what needs to be done and when. Like any car—whether of the gas-engine or EV variety—requirements will differ depending on the vehicle. It begins with knowing and understanding what maintenance is required to keep your EV in good shape.

Monitor Battery Health

Many EV owners get tripped up about monitoring battery health. It’s generally recommended that you steer clear of fully charging or completely depleting the EV battery. Charging the battery to around 80% is usually best. Of course, check the ownership manual for the specifics applicable to your vehicle. Staying on top of battery health will extend the longevity of the battery.

Charge Gradually When Possible

Relying on rapid charging is a no-no. Sure, you’ll be on your way faster. However, an overreliance on Level 3 chargers, rather than alternating between fast charging and Level 1 or 2 charging, can subject the battery to more wear and tear. Take it easy on your battery by gradually charging whenever possible.

Avoid Extreme Temperatures

Another essential EV maintenance tip is to avoid extreme temperatures whenever possible. When parking your EV, opt for covered or shaded areas when temperatures are extreme—whether hot or cold—to maintain a more stable battery temperature.

Precondition the Battery in Cold Weather

By now, you’ve probably figured out there’s more to owning an EV than is advertised. Another maintenance tip to be aware of is preconditioning the battery in frigid weather. If you have an older EV, it might not have a preconditioning feature, but most modern ones do. Use it to precondition the battery before driving. This warms up the battery for more efficient winter driving.

Considering that some EVs can lose as much as 30% of their range in cold weather, you’ll appreciate the importance of preconditioning.

Minimize Rapid Acceleration and Hard Braking

If you drive like a maniac, you will jeopardize your EV’s range. So, avoid rapid acceleration and hard braking to maximize battery life and lessen wear and tear on regenerative braking systems.

Check Tire Pressure Regularly

According to a NewsNation report, EV tires wear as much as 20% quicker than tires on gas or diesel-engine cars. Ensure your tires are properly inflated to maximize range and safety on the road. While discussing tire maintenance, ensure you rotate the tires routinely

Service the Brakes

EVs use regenerative braking to capture energy from the braking process and direct it to the battery to extend range. While regenerative braking reduces wear and tear on the braking system, it isn’t maintenance-free. An EV’s braking system should be regularly inspected and cleaned to keep it functioning correctly.

Maintain Coolant Levels

If your EV has a coolant system for thermal management, ensure you check the levels periodically. The owner’s manual will explain what to do.

Inspect Suspension System

The Driven says EVs are usually 10% to 15% heavier than equivalent internal combustion engine cars. Since EVs are usually heavier than gas or diesel-engine vehicles, you need to check the suspension system regularly. Components might wear out faster and need to be replaced.

Clean Charging Port

Clean the charging port periodically to remove moisture and dust that may hinder the charging process. You don’t have to go crazy, but it’s essential to clean the charging parts and connections every now and then.

Replace Cabin Air Filters

Clean the cabin air filters according to the owner’s manual. That way, you’ll ensure clean air in the EV.

Check for Software Updates

Another essential maintenance task is checking for software updates. EV makers often make these updates available over the air, some more frequently than others. Make a point of checking regularly.

Stay on Top of These Maintenance Items

Stay on top of maintenance if you want your EV to last without costing you too much grief. Considering the average EV costs more than the average car with a diesel or gas engine, you’ll want to extend its longevity so the cost of ownership doesn’t overwhelm you.
