Does the Inside of Your Car Look (And Smell) Like a Landfill? Here Are 16 Tips to Clean Up Your Act

Do people plug their noses or crank down the windows when they enter your car? Unless you’re a neat freak who gets upset at the slightest mess, your car’s interior might look like a hurricane hit it.

If your vehicle is messier and smellier than you’d care to admit, here are 16 tips for cleaning it up.

Use Trash Bins

If you want to keep your vehicle clean, get trash bins. No, we’re not talking about the type you have in your kitchen. You can get small trash receptacles designed for vehicles. Instead of stashing garbage on the floor, glove box, or back seat, put it in the trash bin. It’ll make disposing of the garage easier—and your vehicle won’t look like a trash bin.

Remove Trash Regularly

Having a trash bin for your car is one thing, but emptying it regularly is another. You don’t want to drive hither and thither with a pile of garbage in your vehicle. Whether daily, every other day, or weekly, get in the habit of disposing of the garage in the trash bin. Your passengers will thank you.

Avoid Eating in the Vehicle

One of the most significant contributors to garbage in cars is eating. When drivers and passengers are chowing down on breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks, the vehicle will look worse for the wear afterward.

Unless you diligently clean your car after it’s been used as a cafeteria on wheels, it’s bound to get untidy. You might soon have crumbs, food remnants, and spills everywhere.

Declutter Regularly

Clutter is the enemy of order. The problem is that it’s easy for clutter to sneak up on you. It’s a gradual thing that initially looks harmless but quickly becomes all-encompassing as it gobbles up too much space.

Make a point of decluttering regularly. Otherwise, clutter will return within weeks or months. You can never rest on your laurels or take your foot off the gas pedal. The fight against clutter never stops.

Wipe Down Surfaces Regularly

Wiping down surfaces regularly is a good idea. Use microfiber cloths and appropriate cleaners for the dashboard, panels, seats, and other surfaces to remove dirt, dust, and debris. This will help keep your vehicle’s interior looking great.

Use a Vacuum

Vacuum your car once a week. Garbage won’t have a chance to accumulate when you’re diligent in giving your vehicle’s interior a once-over with a vacuum.

Clean Windows

While some drivers clean the windows from the outside, few are as diligent about the inside. Make a point of cleaning both sides of the windows. A little glass cleaner and some microfiber cloths will go a long way towards getting the job done.

Use Seat Covers

Another way to keep your car clean is to use car seats. MarketsandMarkets says the global car seat segment will grow from $53.7 billion last year to $58.4 billion by 2030. Car seats will not only increase the aesthetic appeal of your vehicle but also make it easier to keep the seats clean. Once in a while, remove them, wash and dry them, and install them again.

Install Floor Mats

Another way to keep your car clean is to install floor mats. Rubber floor mats safeguard the carpets and extend their longevity. When the rubber floor mats get dirty, remove them, hose them down, let them dry, and put them back. Rubber car mats will last a long time.

Scotchgard Fabric Seats

One way to protect your seats is to treat them with Scotchgard. After doing so, it’ll be easier to clean up spills that might otherwise lead to all but impossible to remove stains.

Spot-Clean Stains Immediately

It’s also an excellent idea to spot-clean stains immediately. Don’t ignore them. Failing to clean them up regularly could give them sufficient time to gain too much of a foothold. That’ll make it hard to get the stains out.

Organize Small Items

Use car organizers to keep things in their proper place. You might be surprised at the amount of car organizers on the market. Check out Amazon, eBay, or Temu to see what we mean. They’ll help you stay in control rather than allow clutter to run amok.

Use Spill-Proof Cups

If you consume beverages in your car, buy spill-proof cups. They’ll help ensure your cupholders stay clean and make cleaning up easier.

Store Napkins or Wet Wipes

It makes sense to keep some napkins and wet wipes in the glove box so you can use them whenever the situation calls for them. Whether to address a spill or clean up a mess, they keep your car looking its best.

If you have pets, you should take extra measures to keep your car clean. If your dogs travel with you, you might want to cover your seats. Using a vacuum with an attachment that can easily collect dog hair is also a great idea.

Odor Management

You don’t just want your car to look clean. It’s just as essential to ensure it smells clean, too. That means focusing on odor management. When parking your vehicle, keeping the windows ajar slightly can prevent the buildup of stale air. You can also use air fresheners and replace the cabin air filter regularly to help keep the interior smelling good.
