Are You a Tesla Owner? Here Are 13 Things People Assume About You

It seems like Teslas are everywhere these days. While the company wasn’t the first to manufacture electric vehicles, it’s arguably the most well-known worldwide.

People often use “Tesla” as a synonym for electric cars. Under the leadership of CEO Elon Musk, the company has become a global brand, and many of its models are best-sellers.

In 2023, the Tesla Model Y midsize SUV was the best-selling vehicle worldwide. And, no, that’s not just for EVs. It was the top seller, period. According to JATO Dynamics, 1.22 million units worldwide were sold in 2023, up 64% year over year.

One reason Tesla is so popular is that it has built a formidable network of EV charging stations. According to The Motley Fool, there are 2,443 Tesla Supercharger stations in the U.S. with 28,211 Tesla Supercharger ports.

While range anxiety might very well be an issue until 1,000 miles of range is the norm in the EV industry, the reality is that Tesla’s Supercharger network is an excellent reason to own a Tesla.

Tesla isn’t the only manufacturer of EVs in the U.S., but there’s something about the EV maker that wins over most people looking for EVs. It’s also true that non-Tesla owners have various perceptions about Tesla owners.

Keep reading for 13 things people will assume about you if you own a Tesla.

You Care About the Environment

People may assume you’re a die-hard environmental steward if you drive around in a Tesla. They’ll think you want to lower your carbon footprint—by driving a vehicle that produces no harmful emissions from the tailpipe—and are on the front lines of the fight to save the planet.

You’re a Tech Geek

Another assumption people will make about you is that you’re a tech geek in sync with the newest and hottest technology. EVs are high-tech marvels that captivate the interest and attention of tech fans and the general public.

Some people, perhaps the more jealous among us, sometimes assume that Tesla owners want attention. While owning a Tesla might be a telltale sign of someone wanting a high-tech car for all their friends to see, sometimes it’s more about skipping the gas station than about keeping up the Joneses.

You’re Anti-Gas

Non-Tesla owners also assume that people who drive them are anti-gas. While some EV drivers want to eliminate their dependence on gas, it often has more to do with saving money than virtue signaling.

You’re a High-Earner in Tech Industry

Hedges & Company says the average household salary of a Tesla owner this year is $150,015, down from $153,135 in 2018. However, that’s not to say that all households owning a Tesla bring in six figures. And it’s not just people in the tech industry who are Tesla fans, either.

You’re Anti-Oil Industry

Are Tesla owners anti-oil industry? It’s almost certain that some are—as are many people from different walks of life. The odds are that many Tesla owners have loved ones or friends in the oil sector in some way.

Did you know that almost seven in 10 Americans—66%—experience driving anxiety and that 55% feel anxiety doing basic driving maneuvers? Tesla is one of the leading EV makers in the autonomous driving space. So, some people assume that Tesla owners don’t like driving and await the day their EVs can take over.

You’re Patient

Considering how long it can take to charge EVs in general, some onlookers think EV owners must have the patience of Job. However, one thing they overlook is that Tesla owners with in-home charging stations can charge their vehicles at night while they sleep. So, you don’t have to have super-human patience to own one.

You’re Not Into DIY

Teslas are high-tech machines that are less DIY friendly than some internal combustion engine cars. So, some people assume that Tesla owners don’t want to roll up their sleeves and wrench on cars. If you’re unsure what you’re doing, let an EV mechanic maintain and repair it.

You’re a Gadget Collector

Another assumption people make about you if you drive a Tesla is that you’re a gadget collector—that you simply like high-tech trinkets. They don’t understand that EVs are more than just gadgets.

You’re an Eco-Social Influencer

If you own a Tesla, some people will assume you must be an eco-influencer who posts on social media about the evils of gas and diesel-engine cars and the wonders of EVs.

You’re a City Dweller

It’s understandable why many people think EV owners probably live in the cities or suburbs where the EV charging network infrastructure is strongest. But you might be surprised how many rural dwellers also own Teslas.

You’re an Elon Musk Fan

Tesla owners are often thought to be loyal followers of Elon Musk. While owners may very well be fans of Musk, there’s nothing wrong with having a healthy measure or respect for a billionaire with far-reaching influence.
