Hatchbacks have always been popular due to their cargo space, styling and design, and higher resale value benefits compared to many sedans.

The good news is that many cheap and reliable hatchbacks are on the used car market today. Consider these 16 models, which you can easily find used for south of $5,000.

Toyota Matrix

The Toyota Matrix, initially known as the Toyota Corolla Matrix, is a compact hatchback with a loyal cult following. Sold in the U.S. market for the 2002 to 2013 model years, the Matrix is essentially a Corolla underneath the surface. So, it’s fuel efficient and reliable. And it’s a Toyota. 

Pontiac Vibe

Sold from 2002 to 2010, the Pontiac Vibe is another hatchback you can buy relatively cheaply. It’s actually the sister car to the Toyota Matrix. Toyota and General Motors jointly developed the vehicle. Toyota called their car the Matrix, and GM called their car the Vibe.

While the Matrix and Vibe are similar vehicles, you can often find the Vibe priced at lower than the Matrix in the used car market. The Toyota emblem matters to some drivers.

Mazda 323

Honda Fit
